Globe Telecom has expressed interest in exploring the metaverse, where users can connect, interact and even work together virtually.
The metaverse, in simple terms, is a digital avatar-based universe. It is a virtual reality world where users can interact and experience things or activities as they would in the real world. Web 3.0 will serve as the metaverse’s foundation. It will consist of decentralized blockchain-enabled applications that support an economy of crypto assets and user-owned data. Items on a blockchain are nonfungible tokens (NFTs). NFT is like a certificate of ownership that exist on the blockchain. NFTs are unique and not replaceable, unlike fungible items like currency.
In March 2022, Globe began offering cryptocurrency through the finance app GCash. In addition to allowing crypto investors to buy and pay directly from their GCash e-wallet, the GCash platform will soon enable users to invest, trade, and transact tokens and various coins.
Meanwhile, future Web 3.0 developments are still being discussed within Globe’s wholly-owned corporate venture builder, 917Ventures. Ernest Cu, president and chief executive officer of Globe, stated that announcements regarding new incubated companies could be forthcoming.
“The metaverse is something that we have an interest in. We’re looking at where the synergies would lie. We’re exploring various places.” said Cu at Globe’s recent Q1 media briefing.
“Web 3.0 is a very new ecosystem. I think it behooves one to completely examine the opportunities, the risks involved, and if this will become a lasting industry. So we’re constantly studying,” added Cu.
This third-generation Internet will alter how individuals and businesses utilize the web. It is distinguished by the decentralization of data networks and the absence of a governing body, making participation possible for anyone. Additionally, it is anticipated to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
