Globe has announced that it blocked over 138 million spam and scam messages from January to June 15 this year to keep the public safe from malicious and fraudulent activities online.
According to the telco, the anti-spam blocking peaked in May 2022, with 74.48 million unwanted messages filtered out. Local and international app-to-person and person-to-person messages are included in the total.
Moreover, Globe has deactivated 12,877 mobile numbers between January and May due to spam reports via its Stop Spam web portal (https://ift.tt/1xCWb79).
Globe Chief Information Security Officer Anton Bonifacio said many Filipinos were “quick to adopt” digital technology. This, however, has caused the cybersecurity landscape to become “bleaker,” with numerous attacks and the pandemic being a “force multiplier” to it.
For this reason, the telco increased its efforts to block spam messages through a “stringent filtering system,” according to Bonifacio. They are also pleased that “the public has been vigilant,” reporting these unwanted messages through their reporting portal.
Cybercriminals are a global threat, so the situation is not unique to the Philippines. Globe invests in tools to detect suspicious content on the Internet in order to combat these threats. In addition, reporting tools and processes were enabled for employees, customers, and partners to capture customer concerns about fraud and scams immediately.
